Integrative mental health care is a type of approach combining conventional treatments (“Western” medicine) with complementary or alternative treatments (“Eastern” medicine). This approach to mental wellness includes lifestyle factors such as diet, movement, and stress, as these can often be an underlying cause of illness. Similar to the biopsychosocial model, integrative mental health care assesses different factors that interact and directly impact our overall mental health.

  1. Training and Education:
    • PMHNP: a nurse practitioner who specializes in mental health. They start as registered nurses and then obtain advanced training through a master’s or doctoral degree in nursing with a specific focus on psychiatric and mental health conditions.
    • Psychiatrist: A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MD) who specializes in mental health. They first complete medical school, followed by several years of residency training in psychiatry.
  1. Scope of Practice:
    • PMHNP: able diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe psychiatric medications, and recommend psychiatric treatment plans. PMHNPs perform psychiatric evaluations and provide psychotherapy.
    • Psychiatrist: able to diagnose mental health conditions and prescribe medication. However, they often have a broader scope of practice and tend to manage complex cases and severe mental illnesses.
  1. Approach to Care:
    • PMHNP: approach care from a nursing perspective, which often emphasizes a holistic and patient-centered approach. They often utilize a whole-person approach to care which has a strong focus on the biopsychosocial factors in mental health.
    • Psychiatrist: approach care from a medical perspective, considering both the physical and psychological aspects of mental health. They are trained to diagnose and treat mental illnesses as medical conditions.
  1. Collaboration:
    • PMHNP: collaborate closely with other healthcare providers, including physicians and therapists, to ensure comprehensive care for their patients.
    • Psychiatrist: collaborate with other healthcare providers but may have a more central role in the management of complex mental health cases.

We use methods derived from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Spiritual Psychotherapy, Humanistic Psychology, and Interpersonal Therapy.
